Pattern – Pleated Knitted Headband (2036)

1 x 100g DK in Amethyst (approx 30g required for this project)

Pair of Size 33/4 mm knitting needles,

One Size 3mm double-pointed knitting needle

One Blunt-ended wool needle for sewing up

Tension / Gauge:

Tension is not crucial for this pattern.

Cast on 24 stitches, leaving a long tail of 61 cm (20 inches) to be used in finishing

1st row: *(K4, P4) repeat from* until end of row

2nd row: *(P4, K4) repeat from* until end of row

Recommendation: you may find it gives a neater edge at each side to slip the first stitch and knit the last stitch on every row after the first two rows have been worked.

Repeat these two rows until work fits round the head slightly stretched (approximately 41 cm or 16 inches). It is important that there is some stretch to prevent the item from being too loose around the head.

Shape Front:

Decrease row: *(K2tog) repeat from* until end of row (12 sts)

At cast on edge: slide 3mm double-pointed needle through every st; 24 sts on needle

Decrease row: *(K2tog) repeat from* until end of row, using long tail from cast on (12 sts)

Ensuring there is no twist in the piece, cast off the two edges together; this is the centre front. Turn right side out (cast off edge inside). Fold centre front as shown in photograph, using the junction between knit and purl stitch panels as a guide to fold, sew in place with remaining yarn. Sew in ends.

The item can be worn with a brooch as embellishment on the centre front, or as a cowl.
